马士基公司为续领世界货箱船业务龙头经已跟韩国造船厂商谈建造10+1018,000箱的Malaccamax 型货箱船,每条造价2亿美元, 交船期从2012年尾末开始. 为环保起见此类新船之燃料将是 LNG.

Malaccamax 型船身长度 470, 60, 吃水 21, 载重 30万吨. 是可以通过马六甲海峽最大之船.()

    

Maersk to take massive size leap

AP Moller-Maersk is sizing up a $4bn deal for 20 massive boxships. The Danish group is on the verge of ordering 10 ships of 18,000 teu along with 10 options for its liner shipping division Maersk Line, say informed sources.

The ships are costing up to $200m each and would be the biggest containerships ever built.

They could also be the first to be powered by LNG in an effort to make them more environmentally friendly.

Shipbuilding players familiar with Maersk’s newbuilding requirements say the liner company is seeking to take delivery of a few ships in late 2012 and the remainder in 2013 and 2014.

They expect the supersize vessels to be 360 metres in length with a beam of 58 metres and their box-carrying capacity around 20% higher than the largest containership currently trading.

The jump in size to a “Malaccamax” design would mark a big capacity boost from today’s giants of around 15,000 teu.

The move is seen as a further step by Maersk to gain an advantage over its closest competitors by lowering container-slot costs.

Yet the fact that few yards are capable of building such massive containerships with prototype engines is thought to limit the order to a few South Korean builders.

Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering have been approached and are said to have already reserved early slots.

The order is still subject to some fine-tuning involving commercial and technical issues, say sources.

The technical issues relate to the possible inclusion of green, energy-saving technology that is “unique and hasn’t been priced before”, they say.

According to shipbuilding sources, Maersk is studying the possibility of having the 18,000-teu ships powered by LNG.

“There is a high chance that it may abort the idea as installing the gas tanks would take up a big area on the ships,” said a shipbuilding source.

“On top of that, there are not many ports in the world that have large LNG facilities that can supply the gas to big ships.”

Financing is seen as less of a concern given the success that AP Moller-Maersk has had tapping the bond market for around $2.5bn in the past year.
