一:头条新闻 (Headline news)

1.       集美校友双月刊178       集大航海学院邵哲平院长船长博士参加海军第六批 (2010630日至201117)亚丁湾护航舰队载誉归来.6个月的漫漫征程, 给邵哲平留下的最深刻印象还是飘扬在商船上的祖国万岁等标语. 邵哲平说, 护航舰队的护航令不少商船上的中国船员备感骄傲,认为是祖国强大了,才能派出海军千里护航,当护航般队经过时,船员们全聚集到甲板上,举着祖国万岁之类横幅向护航舰队呼喊.( 1)

2.       贸易风周刊 0504      近日航运市场帶来消息喜忧各半,令人难以预测. 但在运费低迷之际如智利 CSAV 公司今年笫一季亏损 1.86亿美元和日本 K Line总裁因业务下滑而辞职, Zodiac 公司竞然投资12亿美元订造新船. 干散船方面因船只过多船价和运费均日趨下降, 海岬型每天租金已降到每天6500块美元, 加上油价上升,因而导致 Korea Lines 等公司的破产. 造船界也因贷款收缩订单减少, 一些中小造船厂处于难境.

Where do we go from here?

It’s hard to know if we’re heading for boom or bust in these days of mixed signals.

These are rollercoaster days for the maritime industry, reflecting uncertainty about exactly where the freight markets are going. This can be seen as a symbol of wider concerns about the deeper health of the global economy and its future direction.

The latest spending by Sammy Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime Agencies on a second $1.2bn tranche of giant boxships suggests great optimism.

Chilean carrier CSAV, now the seventh-largest of its kind in the world, underlined some of the difficulties by reporting this week a $186m loss in the first quarter.

Companies are being badly hit by rocketing bunker costs as oil hits $124 per barrel but rates have also hit 12-month lows.

The financial figures from tanker operator Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) also make depressing reading with the Morten Arntzen business running up its eight successive quarterly loss.

Liner operators are particularly frustrated that the key westbound trades out of the Far East have performed below expectations.

Certainly, South Korea has been at the forefront of some of the worst corporate carnage, which reflects pessimism among the banks and other lenders there.

We had already witnessed the very messy collapse of Korea Line Corp and now we have deep problems at chemical tanker owner Samho Shipping.

The difficulties at Samho can at least be partly attributed to overoptimistic vessel ordering in the past.

Cancellations of orders has caused havoc at local shipyards, none more so than at Seko Heavy Industries, which has decided to pull out of shipbuilding completely.

No one issue can be blamed for any of these individual corporate failures and many can be traced back to the 2008 banking crisis and the sudden plunge in wider shipping confidence.

CRS estimates that a massive 42 out of 55 contracts signed for boxships over the past 12 months have gone to Korea.

Hanjin Shipping has won a large slug of the latest contracts from Zodiac with others going to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering-run yards in Romania.

The previously unstoppable Chinese, in contrast, have been struggling with only 11 newbuilding contracts of any kind being signed at their yards last month.

That compares with an average of 85 on average per four-week period last year. CRS puts the latest reverse down to the slump in dry-bulk ordering.  

It’s an up-and-down world out there whichever region you are looking at, and it’s hard to predict where we go from here.

“Slow steaming “  is here to stay

Mersk Tankers is hoping others will follow suit after saving some $20,000 per day on ballast legs.

Slow steaming is set to become a permanent feature in shipping, says Maersk Tankers senior director Tommy Thomassen. “I think it is here to stay,” he said.

Maersk Tankers is saving around $20,000 per day by the selective slow steaming on ballast legs of its 300,000-dwt Nautilus-class VLCCs. It also claims to be spearheading super-slow steaming for the tanker industry with main-engine load feasible as low as 10%.

Thomassen says Maersk Tankers, which has benefitted from work carried out by container giant Maersk Line, says slow steaming will be necessary for tankers generally to achieve carbon-dioxide (CO2)-emissions targets.

“The industry will have no choice but to go there,” said Thomassen.

Savings of slightly under 40 tonnes per day in ballast could be achieved by reducing the engine load by 75%. “It is a lot of money,” he said.  

Tanker rates will remain where they are as long as there is a surplus of ships. It is a fact of life, says Thomassen, who adds that various uncertainties mean the market has become harder to predict.

Yangzijiang project fires fear of excess yard capacity

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (Holdings) is set to own the largest dry dock in China.

Informed sources say the Singapore-listed company, which holds a 60% stake in Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding, is building a 543-metre-by-147-metre dock that will be ready from 2013.  

Industry watchers says the new dock will overtake Hong Kong-listed Rongsheng Heavy Industries’s No 4 dry dock, which measures 530 metres by 135 metres and is currently the largest of its kind in the country.

The move has raised concerns that it will further aggravate the excess capacity the Chinese shipbuilding industry is currently facing.  

However, some market players reckon it is necessary for Yangzijiang to own a large dock in order to exercise flexibility and adapt to market changes.

TradeWinds is told that Yangzijiang will be using the dock to construct the 10,000-teu containerships that Seaspan Corp is intending to book. In March, the Canadian owner was said to have inked a letter of intent (LOI) at Yangzijiang for up to 22 newbuildings costing more than $2bn for delivery from January 2014 onward.
