Size is everything in box business
Evergreen has finally seen the light that in container shipping, size is now everything.
As TradeWinds reports this week, the Taiwanese line is looking to commission bigger ships to prevent it slipping further behind as all carriers battle for survival in these tough economic times.
In container shipping, service quality, punctuality and reliability are clearly vitally important. But they are also taken for granted by shippers. Just as we all expect the lights to be kept on and phones to work, box shipping is largely a commoditised business.
When that is the case, price becomes all important, and cost to the tonnage provider equally so. As AP Moller-Maersk has shown so forcefully in recent years, the economies of scale generated by super-sizing boxships provides an almost invincible benefit, not only with the vessels themselves but also with terminals, logistics and all other corporate infrastructure.
Evergreen faces a tough fight to regain its own momentum. The chances of it ever regaining its one-time position as the world’s number-one carrier are marginal.
Unless radical action is taken soon, it is far more likely to be forced to fully merge with other lines than continue its once-proud tradition of independence.

A Taiwanese giant is in talks with owners to charter 10 mega-boxships.
Evergreen is throwing its hat into the mega-boxship arena.
The Taiwanese shipping giant is talking with shipowners with the intention of chartering 10 vessels of 14,000 teu, say brokers.
The $1bn-plus project marks a break with the past as chairman Chang Yung-fa has previously eschewed any interest in the larger ships being ordered by competitors.
It is understood to have solicited interest from several owners interested in supplying the ships with the likes of Seaspan, Danaos, Niki and Lemos included the running.
Evergreen is looking to take the ships for between eight and 12 years with rates under discussion said to be in the region of $52,000 to $54,000 per day, according to sources. They believe the ships will likely be built at more than one South Korean yard as part of a “political project”.
The move is a remarkable turnaround for Evergreen, which has steadfastly refused to enter the market for giant ships.
Its philosophy has been to focus on smaller vessels that are more flexible and easier to fill than larger ones that could only be operated in a single trade.
The company already has plenty of boxships on order — 30 of the so-called L-class for its own account and a handful to be chartered from Costamare — but these are all are in the 8,800-teu size range. The largest ships in its fleet are the 10,000-teu Tianjin and Zim Rotterdam (built 2010), both on charter from Zim until 2013 at $41,000 per day.
But recent weeks have seen the world’s former number-one carrier show signs of panic, particularly in the Asia-to-Europe trades, where it is looking at the very real danger of being priced out of the market by competitors with bigger, more efficient vessels.
