The first Chinese ship has travelled from the Pacific to Atlantic via the Arctic along the Russian coast, an Icelandic scientist who participated on the expedition said Friday.

The Chinese icebreaker ”Xuelong”, or “Snow Dragon”, docked in Iceland after having sailed the so-called Northern Sea Route from the Pacific, Egill Thor Nielsson told AFP.

"This is the first Chinese ship to sail this route and of course it is important because it's a more than 40 percent shorter route to Europe," he said.
The Chinese are even more interested in this route after having found the passage relatively easy.

"It took almost ten days to sail from the East Siberian Sea and through the Barents Sea, and during that time there was real pack ice for only seven days," he said.
Climate change is opening the prospect of commercial shipping via the Northern Sea Route or the Northwest Passage north of Canada.

More and more ships are travelling via the Northern Sea Route. Four made the passage in 2010, 34 last year and the figure will be higher this year, said Nielsson.
The “Snow Dragon”, bought from Ukraine in 1993, is currently China's only ice breaker. A second being built in China with the help of a Finnish company, should be completed in 2014.

Arctic Ocean here we come! China became the latest country to navigate the Northern Sea Route last week when its vessel Snow Dragon arrived in Iceland. Linking the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, the Northern Sea Route allows ships to cut down on travel time from Asia to Europe by edging through the icy waters between north Russia and the North Pole.
China’s adventure shows its growing interest in the route. But they’re not the only ones whose appetites have been whet by the thawing of the Arctic: many in the Northern Hemisphere would welcome a commercial course that could rival the current route.
Until now, ships have been forced to pass by Indonesia, India, the Gulf and finally through the crowded Suez Canal – which saw almost 18,000 vessels chug through last year alone – before reaching the Mediterranean.
Following a northern course instead – west above Canada or east above Russia – cuts the journey time by half, as pointed out by Chairman of Norway-based Tschudi Shipping, Felix H. Tschudi, in an interview with Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun published on Tuesday:

"If a cargo ship with a maximum load capacity of 40,000 tons can pass through the Northern Sea Route, that will shorten the journey by 22 days and cost $839,000 [670,000 euros] less than going through the Suez Canal." The article also notes that 1,000 tonnes less fuel is needed for the northern journey.

Yesterday the Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry commodities, fell on Thursday as rates for capesize vessels sank to touch more than three-year lows due to chronic oversupply and limited activity.

The main index, which gauges the cost of shipping commodities such as iron ore, cement, grain, coal and fertiliser, fell 8 points or 1.1 percent to 720 points.
The Baltic's capesize index slipped 15 points or 1.34 percent to 1,105 points, hitting its lowest this year. Earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, was down $141 at $2,877.
The capesize index has fallen about 90 percent this year and is hovering at a level last seen in late 2008.
"Keeping buyers at bay were continued declines in Chinese steel and international iron ore prices, which are down 16 percent and 24 percent, respectively, from the peak in April this year," RS Platou Markets analyst Herman Hildan said in a note. The Baltic's panamax index remained unchanged from Wednesday at 801 points.
The panamax segment seems to follow in the footsteps of the capesize segment, with a huge influx of new vessels in the first seven months of 2012, said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst with ship association BIMCO.

"We expect that 15.5 percent of the panamax fleet will be less than a year old at the end of 2012. This puts mounting pressure on owners to postpone deliveries or even better, to try cancellation of orders if possible," he added.

Average daily earnings for handysize ships were down $54 to $7,263, while those for supramax ships were down $96 to $8,860.
Growing ship supply has been outpacing commodity demand for some time and is widely expected to weigh on dry bulk freight rates in the coming months. The overall index, which factors in the average daily earnings of capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize dry bulk transport vessels, has fallen about 59 percent this year.
