Shanghai’s container traffic surpassed Singapore’s last year, making the wealthiest city of China the world’s busiest port as the economy churns out more goods for export and draws in greater trade flows.
Traffic in 2010 rose to 29.05 million, 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, the Shanghai municipal government said in a press release on its website. That’s about 500,000 TEUs more than Singapore, the Jan. 5 release said. Shanghai’s cargo volume was about 650 million metric tons last year, it said.
The traffic increase got a boost from the growing domestic economy, recovery in Europe and the U.S. and the Shanghai 2010 World Expo, the statement said. China’s central government said in 2009 that it aimed to make Shanghai the world’s financial and shipping center by 2020.
The Shanghai government will press on with a trial of export-tax refunds and may expand the exercise, while improving infrastructure, including the building of a tunnel, to help improve the port’s road traffic, the statement said.
Shanghai will develop shipping-price derivatives and study an index of the city’s marine transport, the statement said. The city will also lobby the central government to let luxury cruise agencies register in Shanghai, it said.

Global Ship Orders to Rise 4% This Year on Trade Rebound, South Korea Says
Global shipbuilding orders may rise 4 percent this year to the highest since 2008 as economic recovery drives demand for consumer goods and fuel, according to estimates South Korea’s industrial ministry released today.
New vessel contracts will probably rise to 35 million compensated gross tons, led by orders for ships to carry containers and liquefied natural gas, South Korea’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy said. The tonnage total would be the most since 2008, when it was 47.1 million tons, according to Clarkson Plc., the world’s largest shipbroker.
“We are forecasting an optimistic outlook for container ships and offshore projects this year,” the industrial ministry said in the statement. “Shipping rates for the container sector are expected to maintain a gradual increase this year.”
Container-Ship Orders
Contracts for container ships may almost double to 6.7 million tons this year as global box shipping volume is expected to grow 10 percent, the ministry said. Demand for LNG vessels may climb 75 percent to 1.4 million tons, the ministry said.
Orders for bulk carriers may drop 43 percent to 7.8 million tons this year amid concerns of oversupply, the ministry said.
