China is claiming that it will regain the crown of the world’s largest shipbuilding nation this year as it races ahead of South Korea in the contracting stakes.

According to figures released by the China Association of the Shipbuilding Trade (CAST) between January and November this year the country’s yards have won orders for 33.6m-dwt.

That is down 47.34% on the previous year because of the shipping recession. But it is considerably better than nearest rival South Korea is faring.

CAST estimates that over the same period Korean yards have only won orders for 27.4m-dwt.

Yet even the Chinese admit the number one spot could be set to change hands again next year. Chinese government officials are quoted in Japanese financial daily Nikkei as saying that China’s specialist tanker and bulker markets will continue to be in recession this year while South Korea will benefit from an expected boom in high value ships such as LNG carriers.

Yet Clarksons’ figures on the order backlog confirm China’s dominance. It estimates on a compensated gross ton basis China accounts for 39% of the world orderbook and South Korea 32.5%.

MOL orders green capesize

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has ordered a futuristic high efficiency capesize bulk carrier as part of the Japanese company’s promise to develop green technologies and reduce its impact on the environment.

MOL president Koichi Muto said that that the ship will be built at Universal Shipbuilding for delivery in 2014. The vessel will have a cargo capacity of 209,000 tons, MOL added.

Market sources suggest that the ship could be lined up for a long term freight contract with steel maker JFE which is also a major shareholder in Universal.

The design is the result of an environmental project to develop a green ship of the future dubbed Ishin-III.

Muto said: “MOL has repeatedly studied various technologies to realize the concept for the Ishin-III series of next generation of large scale ore carriers since 2010.”

MOL said that the ship would be 20% more fuel efficient than current capesizes and that the lower fuel consumption would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the ship.

The efficiency gains have been won from a steam turbine using exhaust heat from the engine to generate electrical power, a hybrid power generation system to convert rotational force from the supercharger into electrical power and other features to assist the vessel propulsion.

“MOL continues to take proactive stance in technological development with the aim of reducing the environmental burden of its ships,” Muto said.

Giant bulker into China

A very large ore carrier has been allowed into a Chinese port for the first time.

The 388,000-dwt Berge Everest (built 2011), operated for Brazilian mining giant Vale by BW Group, has arrived in Dalian with a full cargo of iron ore from Brazil, BW Group confirmed to Bloomberg.

The move appears to be a breakthrough in the ongoing dispute between Vale and Chinese authorities over their unwillingness to allow the company’s VLOCs into China, the very market they were designed to serve.

It began when the 400,000-dwt Vale Brasil (built 2011) was rerouted on its maiden voyage from Brazil to China this summer.

Clarksons Capital Markets predicted earlier this month that China would only remove obstacles preventing Vale’s VLOCs from entering its ports once the first of the domestically built ships enters the game.

The Berge Everest, built by Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China, is the first of four VLOCs operated by BW Group for Vale. The rest are due to hit the water next year.

The ship is owned by Berge Bulk which is controlled by the Sohmen family, who also own BW Group.
