Wallem boss wants more China business

Thursday, 04 April 2013 | 13:30

The Wallem Group is determined to get more business out of China. Already with ventures with Nanjing Tanker and Cosco, and a leading position in port agency on the mainland, group managing director Simon Doughty said there’s still plenty more for his company in China. “China is a huge market,” Doughty told SinoShip News. “I still feel we've not got enough out of it.”
The diversified maritime services company, best known for its shipmanagement operations, has a shipbroking division, which added a Shanghai team in the past six months.
On the agency side, where Doughty started out with Wallem back in 2005, and a sphere of the business he described as “the barometer of shipping”, the Wallem boss noted that calls into China were down, but were starting to pick up again.
Wallem is pushing ahead with a new office in the western outskirts of Shenzhen, which will have six people to begin with. “It’s an opportunity to look at our crewing pool in China,” Doughty explained. Of the 416 ships Wallem manages, 65 have full Chinese crew. Doughty reckoned Wallem would cross the 500-ship mark within the next three years.
Wallem is 110-years-old this year; it was founded by a Norwegian in Shanghai.

Xixiakou wins lawsuit against owner and engine manufacturer    西霞口造船厂狀告瓦锡兰集团一案于今天获大连海事法院判得胜诉和得赔 1.35亿人民币.  Apr 16, 2013

Dalian: Rongsheng Xixiakou Shipbuilding has finally won its case against Spliethoff and engine maker Wartsila after nearly two years.

Qingdao Maritime Court has reached its final decision, adjudging Spliethoff, Wartsila Finland and Wartsila (Shanghai) were involved in fraudulent practices. The court has ruled Wartsila must provide two same set new engines and propeller systems to Xixiakou, and the three defendants must pay RMB135m to the Chinese shipyard.

The case started in 2006 when Xixiakou won a 12,500 dwt vessel order from Spliethoff and bought two engines from Wartsila which were picked up by the owner, however, the engines were damaged and found to be second-hand products.

Sea Asia 2013 Ends - Record breaking attendance of more than 13,000 participants

Friday, 12 April 2013

Sea Asia 2013 ended on a high note this evening with a clutch of records broken at what is now confirmed as Asia’s leading maritime conference and exhibition.
As Sea Asia closed at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore, it was revealed by the organisers that 13,167 people from 68 countries attended the three-day event this week.
The number of participants, comprising visitors, exhibitors, conference delegates, speakers and media, was announced as the dates for the next Sea Asia were confirmed. The next Sea Asia will take place on April 21 to 23 in Singapore in 2015, co-organisers Seatrade and the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) said.
SMF Chairman, Mr Michael Chia said: “Sea Asia 2013 has been a significant success. The show has managed to draw a total of more than 13,000 unique participants, exceeding the previous attendance figures at the  Sea Asia 2011 show and its previous editions. We have achieved yet another milestone for the Sea Asia show and we look forward to make the next Sea Asia show in 2015 an even greater success.”
The Sea Asia conference sessions also saw an increase in the number of participants this year with the final delegate number up at around 700 over three days from 39 countries.
The enthusiasm for Sea Asia 2011 demonstrates the need for a clearer and stronger voice for the Asian shipping community is now even higher on the international agenda.
The level of international participation
in Sea Asia from exhibitors and visitors is a reflection that this show is on the right track to become one of the must-attend maritime events in the global maritime calendar.
Sea Asia has grown dramatically since its inauguration in 2007. The 2011 show showed significant growth on the launch show figures. And this year’s event has been able to show further growth in what is still a difficult market for most shipowners around the world today.
Sea Asia 2013 occupied almost 17,000 sqm of gross space at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre in an exhibition of 385 maritime businesses from 36 countries. There were country pavilions from China, Holland, Japan, Korea, Norway, Panama, Qatar, Singapore and the UK.
The event was the crown jewel of Singapore’s Maritime Week and show visitors were able to take part in a host of other side events and activities which truly reflected the strength and depth of Singapore’s emergence as an international maritime centre.
“ABS is pleased to support Sea Asia as it continues to expand into a leading international offshore and marine event. The professional level of this conference and exhibition will draw current and future industry leaders for years to come.”

Sea Asia 201: Ship Finance Session a Major Draw As Owner Calls on Banks to Reform

Thursday, 11 April 2013 | 00:00

The Sea Asia conference and exhibition, Asia’s iconic show for the maritime sector taking place in Singapore this week, continued at a pace this morning with sessions on finance and an Offshore Marine Forum.
While visitors to the exhibition at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre continued to click through the gates this morning, delegates in the Ship Finance session were hearing a discussion on the current state of the global market.
Chaired by Harald Serck-Hanssen, Group Executive Vice President, Head of Large Corporates & International, DNB Bank ASA, the session heard a senior panel of speakers discuss the supply and demand equation in the sector.
More than 200 delegates attended the morning session which addressed the central questions: does the current shipping cycle differ from the past and is there a paradigm shift in shipping finance?
A leading owner, Coco Vroon of Vroon B.V. called on banks to stop supporting what he called “weak companies” and for a rationalization among shipping banks.
He said the problem banks had was they refused to accept losses and "take their medicine". This had led to an oversupply and low rates prevalent in the market now with bad companies being kept afloat, which had depressed the market, he said.
In defence of banks, BNP Paribas Asia Head of Shipping and Offshore Finance Arnold Wu said the lending institutions were “naturally averse” to foreclosures on ships because they were much harder to do. Unlike in the housing market, foreclosing on a ship was "a painful and difficult exercise", he said.
Also speaking at the finance session this morning were Mario Béhé, Managing Director, Global Co-Head Ship Finance, Credit Suisse AG, Chen Bin, Deputy General Manager, Transport Finance department, the Export-Import Bank of China, Khalid Hashim, Managing Director, Precious Shipping Ltd, and Hong Kong and Yang Chang-kun, Managing Director, Shipping, ICBC Leasing.
Co-organisers Seatrade said this morning that Day Two of Sea Asia 2013 continues to exceed expectations in terms of the number of participants and feedback received. More than 14,000 people are expected to attend the conference and exhibition across its three days.

The fourth edition of Sea Asia, the iconic conference and exhibition for the maritime industry, kicks off in Singapore tomorrow.
Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be the Guest of Honour to officially open Sea Asia 2013 and tour the exhibition tomorrow morning.
Overseas maritime professionals across the globe are flying into Singapore for the three day mega-maritime event at the Marina Bay Sands Conference and Exhibition Centre. The organisers are expecting about 14,000 participants to take part in this year’s show.

With these heavyweight sessions scheduled for the first day of the show, Sea Asia 2013 balances day two and day three of the conference with other aspects of the maritime industry such as Ship Finance, Green Technology, LNG and LPG and the newly created Offshore Marine Day.
Sea Asia 2013 also provides extensive networking opportunities for participants wishing to forge new business relationships or re-establish old ones. Networking events include the GAC Sea Asia 2013 Golf Classic, cocktail receptions, and a host of other activities in and around the exhibition hall.

Singapore launches sale of ships form           新加坡推出船舶买卖合同

Wednesday, 10 April 2013 | 00:00

Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and LexisNexis® Singapore have jointly launched the Sale of Ships Under The Singapore Form publication on Monday.
“The Sale of Ships Under The Singapore Form publication will be the definitive guide to the Singapore Ship Sale Form. We certainly welcome this publication as it would serve as a good and practical reference resource for maritime professionals who are involved in the sale and purchase of vessels,” said David Chin, executive director, SMF.
The publication also features useful tips, providing readers with the essential reference tool for the negotiation, closing and enforcement of any ship sale, including the details of Singapore arbitration proceedings.
With Asian shipowners controlling about 50% of the world's merchant fleet and economic powerhouses China and India expected to witness growth, maritime arbitration and dispute cases in the region are also expected to increase.
SMF had already responded by launching the Singapore Ship Sale Form in 2011.
