Hyundai Heavy Starts Work on World’s Biggest Ship

Hyundai Heavy Industries could bring some cheer to the depressed global shipbuilding industry.

Monday, the South Korean company started work on what will be the biggest containership in the world – a 19,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) vessel for China Shipping Container Lines (Hong Kong) Co. Ltd.

Hyundai Heavy has a contract to build five of these ships for China Shipping by the end of the first quarter next year. The one it started work on Monday is due for delivery in November.

Newbuilding orders keep on piling up

Ship owners are set to further expand the global orderbook, if the first few weeks of the New Year are anything to go by. So far, newbuilding ordering activity is on the rise, compared to the respective period of last year, which was already a rather active one, in fact the busiest year since the dawn of the global financial crisis back in 2008-2009. According to the latest weekly report from shipbroker Golden Destiny, newbuilding activity was up 59% on the week and 338% on the year, compared to the same week of last year. In total, ship owners placed orders for 57 vessels with an aggregate deadweight tonnage of 4,772,400 tons, while 35 transactions were reported at an undisclosed price. The invested capital for the remaining 22 orders reached $1.13 billion. In total, orders were placed for 25 bulkers, 14 tankers, 4 gas tankers, 4 containers, 1 passenger/cruise, 2 car carriers and 7 special projects.

"The largest volume of newbuilding activity is reported in bulk carrier with focus in the ultramax segment and in the tanker with focus on crude carrier vessel categories. Orders for bulk carriers held 44% share of this week’s ordering activity; tankers 25% share, gas tankers 7% share, containers 7% share, and special projects 12% share. At similar week in 2013, 13 fresh orders had been reported with the largest activity in the tanker segment -6 reported new contracts. (2 bulkers, 6 tankers, 1 gas tanker and 4 special projects). Compared with previous week’s levels, a large decrease of 58% is recorded in the volume of new orders for bulkers (25 new orders from 59 in the last week), 22% weekly decrease in the tanker (14 new orders from 18 in the last week) and 86% weekly decrease in the container (4 new orders from 29 last week)", Golden Destiny noted.

Meanwhile, in a separate report from shipbroker Clarkson Hellas, "starting with dry, it has been a relatively active week in the newbuilding market with orders being reported across all major sectors. Qingdao Yangfan announced an order for four firm plus two option 206,000 DWT Newcastlemax from Trafigura Beheer. Pricing was not disclosed, however delivery of the firm vessels is due from the third quarter of 2015 and options in the second half of 2016 if declared. Klaveness have declared the 5th and 6th in a series of 82,000 DWT Kamsarmax at Jiangsu New Yangzijiang, both for delivery in 2016. It also emerged that Klaveness have ordered two firm 80,500 DWT combination carriers at Zhejiang Ouhua, for delivery in mid-2016. At Zhejiang Yangfan, d’Amico have declared options for two further 64,000 DWT Ultramax. Both are due to deliver in 2016 and takes the series to a total of six vessels. Two separate orders to report for Lauritzen Bulkers, with two 61,000 DWT Ultramax at DACKS and two 63,000 DWT Ultramax at Imabari. Pricing remains undisclosed, however delivery is planned for 2016 and 2017 at each yard respectively. Finally it was reported that Pioneer Marine contracted two firm 38,000 DWT Handysize at Taizhou Sanfu, with both due to deliver in 2016",

Shanghai FTZ may influence registration of China's merchant fleet

China Shipping (Group) has switched its registered location to the Yangshan deepwater harbor, south of Shanghai, for three years, but most of its deep-sea vessels are still listed under its Hong Kong branch and do not fly the flag of the People's Republic of China.

However, with the launch of the Shanghai free trade zone on Sunday which includes the launch of shipping services as one of its priorities, the impact on domestic shipping enterprises such as China Shipping will be substantial.

Shipping experts have cautioned however that there is a long way to go before the ships can return for registration.

Although many ships owned by China Shipping do not fly the PRC flag, this situation is not unique to China's shipping sector.

Currently, 56% of China's ships fly flags of convenience, while those that fly the PRC flags only account for 44%. The total tonnage of the ships flying the PRC flags is even lower than that of ships flying the Hong Kong flag.

Ships that fly flags of convenience register in any country that will accept them, such as Panama, Bermuda and Malta, but they can freely ply the world's shipping routes.

Shanghai's First Financial Daily said the scale of China's fleet has continued to expand, but the number of Chinese-funded ships registering overseas has also continued to climb.

Lei told the newspaper that this was because registering a ship in China requires the payment of various taxes, and the registration procedures are more complex; besides this, the management of the vessel following registration is more rigorous in China than elsewhere.

He cited as an example that it normally takes two hours to complete the registration of a ship, but more than 100 days are needed at Yangshan Harbor.

Shanghai retains crown as world's busiest container port in 2013

China's Shanghai port has retained its title as the world's busiest container port in 2013 with a total throughput of 33.6m teu, up 3.4% from 32.5m teu in 2012.

Shanghai port has been the world's largest container port since 2010 when its volumes surpassed that of Singapore, its closest rival.

Singapore recorded a throughput of 29.8m teu in the first 11 months of last year, indicating that the port would need in excess of 3.8m teu of throughput in December to beat Shanghai. Singapore is expected to release its 2013 volumes tomorrow.

Last year in October, Shanghai opened a two-way traffic lane in the main channel of Yangshan Deepwater Port, allowing shipping lines to save on costs and boost turnover for the port.

Shanghai is also accelerating the implementation of shipping-related policies under the new pilot free trade zone and studying the launch of the trading of freight index derivatives, according to Shanghai Urban Construction and Communications Commission.

The city will also extend a tax rebate program to facilitate the refund of exported goods to be claimed at their ports of departure if shippers use Yangshan as a transit, the local media reported.

No refuge for fire-damaged chemical tanker Maritime Maisie

Stricken chemical tanker Maritime Maisie has remained without refuge after Japanese and South Korean authorities declined to honour requests from operator MSI Ship Management.

The 44,404 dwt Hong-Kong-flagged vessel, which was swept between Korean and Japanese waters during its 19 days on fire, was finally extinguished by salvors last Thursday after having been ablaze since 29 December.

The vessel’s 27 crew were safely evacuated by the Korean Coast Guard in the early stages of the fire, which followed a collision between the tanker and newbuild car carrier Gravity Highway off Busan, while the latter was on a sea trial from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The tanker was carrying 29,337 tonnes of volatile chemicals.

“It is now very crucial and important that the tanker is granted a place of shelter or port of refuge in order for the safe transfer of the remaining cargo and bunkers,” MSI said in a statement. “The firefighting efforts were hampered by the difficult weather conditions where the waves were sometimes up to 3m high.

“As a result, the salvor could not carry out the fire fighting effectively and had to stop from time to time as it was too dangerous.”

The news follows calls from the International Salvage Union (ISU), Internation Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Union of Maritime Insurance (IUMI) for governments to tackle to the issue of places of refuge for distressed vessels.
