China Now World's Largest Liquid Fuels Importer by MarineLink.com
03/26/2014
In September 2013, China's net imports of petroleum and other liquids exceeded those of the United States on a monthly basis, making it the largest net importer of crude oil and other liquids in the world. The rise in China's net imports of petroleum and other liquids is driven by steady economic growth, with rapidly rising Chinese petroleum demand outpacing production growth.
U.S. total annual petroleum and other liquids production is expected to rise 31% between 2011 and 2014 to 13.3 million barrels per day, primarily from tight oil plays. In the meantime, Chinese production will increase at a much lower rate (5% over this period) and is forecast to be only a third of U.S. production in 2014.
On the demand side, China's liquid fuels use is expected to reach more than 11 million barrels per day in 2014, while U.S. demand hovers close to 18.9 million barrels per day, well below the peak U.S. consumption level of 20.8 million barrels per day in 2005. U.S. refined petroleum product exports increased by more than 173% between 2005 and 2013, lowering total net U.S. imports of petroleum and other liquids.
China has been diversifying the sources of its crude oil imports in recent years as a result of robust oil demand growth and recent geopolitical uncertainties. Saudi Arabia continues to be the largest supplier of crude oil to China and in 2013 provided 19% of China's 5.6 million barrels per day. Because production levels from Iran, Libya, and Sudan and South Sudan dropped since 2011, China replaced the lost shares of crude oil and other liquids imports from these countries with imports from Oman, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Angola, Venezuela, and Russia.

Transas: New Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator Transas Marine推出天然气船过船 LCHS 5000 TechSim 培训模拟器.
Thursday, March 20, 2014
Transas Marine launched its new liquid cargo handling simulator LCHS 5000 TechSim LNG which reportedly is the first one in the market to boast ship-to-ship transfer functionality.
The new Transas LCHS 5000 TechSim product line includes simulators for LNG tanker, LNG terminal and LPG carrier. Ship-to-ship transfer is a complex operation which requires adequate training to minimise the risks of damage to personnel, environment and assets. Transas LCHS 5000 allows for a complete resource management training involving crews of both mother and daughter vessels.
The new simulator will enable trainers to provide realistic, in-depth training using the high-end simulation technology ingerent within LCHS 5000 TechSim. This includes vessel team management exercises as well as interaction with terminal operations staff. The LNG vessel and LNG terminal simulator models were developed in a close collaboration with the Sczecin Maritime Academy, Poland. Simulated models have been designed to reflect real installations which are currently under-construction at the Swinoujscie LNG terminal in Poland.
To further complement the liquid gas vessel model range, an LPG vessel model was developed by Transas and validated by LPG operators.
Korean Register releases world’s first mobile app containing IMO conventions
Thursday, 03 April 2014 | 20:40
韩国船级社出版第一个包括IMO公约之世界行动 app, 用者可下载到手机.
Korean Register (KR) – an IACS member classification society – announces the release of the world’s first mobile app containing all up-to-date IMO conventions.
This brand new facility is based on KR’s award winning KR-CON software which is an international database program containing the full up-to-date texts of all IMO Conventions, Codes, Resolutions and Circulars. It enables users to identify regulations relevant to a specific task and helps ensure all IMO requirements are applied correctly. KR-CON is currently being used by surveyors, port state control inspectors, shipping companies, shipyards and design houses in more than 30 countries across the world.
The app version of KR-CON was developed to meet an increasing demand from users wanting to access information whilst on the move. KR-CON is now in its 12th iteration and migrating the system to an app environment was the next logical step in its evolution.
The app may be downloaded from the Google and Apple play stores.
On its launch, Dr. Chon Young-kee, Chairman & CEO of KR said:
“The mobile version of KR-CON facilitates easy and on-the-go access to our database which enhances its user-friendliness and satisfies the wishes of our current users. This new version includes photos, diagrams and videos related to the IMO conventions and codes. These will illustrate what used to be a text only system and will help our users further understand complex IMO communications. Our aim is to maximize our users’ understanding of these conventions”
The 12th edition also includes an enhanced record-tracking facility which now covers 10 conventions and codes. This allows users to easily identify and track the many amendments which have been applied to IMO instruments.
Recent amendments adopted at the 28th IMO Assembly, the 92nd MSC (Maritime Safety Committee) and the 65th MEPC (Maritime Environment Protection Committee) are included in this release of KR-CON and the database is continuously updated via the KR website.

Shipbuilding orders flowing back to Chinese yards 造船订单涌至中国, 今年首二个月订单同比上升259% 或1808万吨.
from Singapore
Orders for new ships have been flowing back to Chinese shipbuilders, particularly the bigger yards, allowing them to record stronger earnings compared to a year ago.
In the first two months of 2014, Chinese shipbuilders received new vessel orders totalling 18.08m dwt in capacity, a jump of 259% compared to the corresponding period of 2012, according to data from China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (Cansi).
From January to February this year, Chinese yards completed new vessel tonnage amounting to 4.14m dwt, a decrease of 27.2% year-on-year. This leaves the yards with an existing orderbook of 144.93m dwt in tonnage terms, up 36.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, Cansi figures showed.
The completed vessel tonnage bound for export was 3.65m dwt, a decline of 25.8% from a year earlier while new vessel orders due for export were recorded at 15.587m dwt in capacity, representing a surge of 307% over the corresponding period.
Most of the orders, meanwhile, are concentrated in a handful of China’s 1,600 yards. The country’s 54 biggest yards received new orders of 17.89m dwt in capacity in January and February, soaring 232% from a year ago while existing orderbook stood at 139.9m dwt, up 42.4%.
Cansi also recorded that the value of vessels delivered by 87 strongest Chinese yards in January and February this year was put at RMB50.09bn ($8.07bn), an increase of 9.2% compared to the same period of 2012.
The 87 yards generated revenue of RMB30.8bn in the two-month period, up 10.8% year-on-year and profit came up to RMB480m, up 123.3%.

1. Vale receives its first Valemax vessel in Malaysia 淡水河谷公司于马来西亚之转口站迎来第一条40万吨船. Tuesday, 25 March 2014 | 20:00
Vale celebrated today the arrival of the first Valemax, the world’s largest iron ore carrier, to the shores of its Teluk Rubiah Maritime Terminal and iron ore distribution center, currently under commissioning in Malaysia. The vessel arrival marks an important milestone as the company looks towards the completion of the distribution hub by the second half of 2014.
With a total investment of US$ 1.371 billion, Teluk Rubiah is a cornerstone of Vale’s business strategy of investing in high efficiency, integrated production and logistics systems which aim to enhance the company’s capabilities of generating customized solutions for its clients in Asia and Southeast Asia.
The facilities are comprised of a deep water jetty and an onshore stockyard of where different types of iron ore can be blended and customized to the needs of regional steelmakers. When completed, the first phase of the Malaysia distribution center will have a capacity of 30 million tons per year of iron ore.
Until February 2014, the Valemax vessels performed 170 unloading operations in 10 different ports around the world on top of our two floating transfer stations in the Phillippines. Vale has already exported about 56 million tons of iron ore through these vessels. Currently, there are 30 Valemax ships (owned and chartered) in operation.

1. Ferry ‘Sewol’ disaster – people are trapped inside.韩国客轮 ‘Sewol’号于今早 8点38分在首尔南边海面沉没导致293名乘客失踪成为世纪大惨剧.
Yuonhap News Agency update: Posted on April 16, 2014, 5:52 am
According to the latest government figures, the 6,325-ton Sewol was carrying 459 people, including 325 students from a high school in Ansan, just south of Seoul, when it sent out a distress signal at 8:58 a.m. in waters 20 kilometers off the island of Byeongpoong.
Of them, 164 have been rescued, two died and 293 remain unaccounted for, officials said.
The government had earlier announced that 368 people were rescued, but officials later acknowledged there was an error in tallying up figures.
The cause of the accident was not known, though survivors said they heard a banging noise before the ship suddenly started sinking. Speculation has arisen that the ship might have hit an underwater rock or collided with another vessel.
Comment:
Most part, or all of missing people are no doubt, trapped inside the vessel, those who managed to get to open decks and jump overboard, just couldn’t be missed, considering daytime and calm weather.
Hitting a rock or collision with another vessel could hardly be responsible for vessel’s sinking. This is clearly a case of lost stability due to water ingress onto cargo (car deck). How and why water found its way to cargo deck, is not all that important for now, what’s important, are the questions of timing – when did the captain find about water ingress; and of his decision not to announce general alarm when (if) he understood vessel was losing stability.
There no chance of rescuing all the people trapped inside the vessel, some people surviving in air bags may be rescued, but just some. Such a tragically high toll makes ‘Sewol’ disaster one of the biggest maritime disasters in 21-st century.

Handy
No difference for the players in the Supra section - market is in a steady decent in both hemispheres there is nowhere to hide. Rumors of cancelled grain requirements from ECSA to China adding fuel to the negative sentiment. Atlantic is suffering from lack of fresh business and ships are ending spot. Standard scarp buiz to Turkey now giving owners returns in the
low/mid-teens, that is for those who find it. Bl.Sea to USG pays 4k/day but fronthaul candidates may get 16k + depending on direction and duration. 2-3 laden legs done around 11k within the Atlantic, bss APS NCSA. ECSA 14k done APS for trip to Wafr, less to Med and 13 + 350 to FEast. NOPAC fxd 11k but rates under pressure. Indo rounds to India at about same money and
heading in the same direction. Period activity is slow and low.
Panamax
The negative trend from last week continued this week, Atlantic still very slow and rates pending best case around 2-3k. Many ships idle waiting for employment or simply don´t justify sailing at present levels. Pacific hemisphere also corrected down but not in the same way as Atlantic. Pacific rounds hovering in the low/mid 8k. Fronthaul under pressure as well and paying now in the 13 + 300k bonus range. Limited period activity last week but despite the poor spot market owners ask 13-14k for typically 12 months . Both hemispheres need fresh new cargoes and requirements in order to recover. On the supply side the newbuilding still popping out from the yards.
Capesize
Rates have been under pressure for all routes and although the west Australian miners have been fairly active, volume has not been sufficient to avoid a total collapse in the Cape market. There is still a lack of TA cargoes, with bids presently around USD 6000/day. This combined with no Brazil/China cargoes for weeks, reflected in the fact that last done is close to mid-20s, whilst present bid is in the USD 18-19 pmt region. In addition coal markets have been difficult and the Panamaxes are under even more pressure, i,e, the overall picture presently look dark.
