Chinese presence at Posidonia 2014

in International Shipping News 09/06/2014

China, as a global shipping power, is the top participant at Posidonia 2014, the world’s biggest shipping exhibition –being held in Greece this week. Filio Kontrafouri visited Posidonia 2014 and some of the Chinese exhibitors, who have to compete in an increasingly challenging industry.

The world’s largest maritime trade fair is the place where Chinese shipping companies come out in force. And this year China is showcasing more advances in order to keep up with competition. From new, state of the art drilling rigs to eco-designed ships that are revealed to the world for the first time. According to exhibitors, they are much in demand.

“You think about how to save money for the operational stage so the eco design is very-very important, how to save money for the operational stage. So we should be balancing the ship building and the ship operation.” Zhu Zhentao, General Manager & Senior Engineer of Shanghai Bestway Marine Engineering Design said.

With over 100 stands at the exhibition, China is hoping once again to attract even more investments. According to event organizers, last year, Greek ship owners alone ordered over 70 percent of their new vessels from Chinese shipyards.

The same trend is expected this year. Greek shippers are the biggest buyers of new ships. Industry insiders acknowledge that the business is not booming but the mood is positive. What’s needed they say is finding ways to move forward.

“As shipbuilders, we should try and make more contributions to the market. We’d like to develop new types of ships. Also, we can make cooperation with designers and ship owners to try and design new ships, to make a contribution to the environment and the global economy.” Li Xiang, General Office Director of China Shipbuilding & Offshore International said.

New ship contracts for Chinese shipyards mean more business for dozens of other Chinese companies in the shipping supply chain. Aside from offering attractive deals, manufacturers say they strive to offer quality and high standards that will make them competitive –not only with western firms.

“We have a strong technical department to make improvements to the grabs. And also we have some cooperation with some universities, like the Shanghai Maritime University to do improvements to our grabs. That way we can keep our company competitive with the other Chinese manufacturers.” Practy Jia, Sales Engineer, Shanghai Janus Grab Co., said.

After a five-year downturn in global shipping, the recovery signs are here. And China as a shipbuilding conglomerate, experts say, can expect that many contracts will be coming its way.

Posted on May 30, 2014, 3:54 am

Chemical tanker Shoko Maru suffered explosion and fire in Inner Japan Sea, some two kilometers south of Kobe, at around 0920 Tokyo Time on May 29. Vessel was in ballast after offloading heavy oil or according to other reports, crude oil, in one of the ports of Hyogo prefecture, Inner Japan Sea. At the time of an accident tanker is said to be stationary, meaning she was drifting or anchored, most probably anchored. It is believed, that the explosion was triggered by sparks from grinding machine one of the crew used to remove paint, apparently on cargo deck. Fumes in cargo tanks exploded, followed by fire of the cargo residues. Out from 8 crew 7 were rescued, 4 of them were hospitalized. Bosun seemed to suffer most of all, with burns over all his body. Master of the vessel went missing. Fire was extinguished by CG and firefighting vessels, but severely damaged tanker sank first in the late afternoon.

GENERAL COMMENT

Activity is picking up for most yards in the Far East. It seems that the temporary slowdown early parts of the year is over. Although many of the orders reported are options, the sentiment seems to be changing, and willing
Owners are back for more tonnage. If the current activity prevails, prices will continue to increase.

4. CHARTERING – DRY BULK (2014 week #23 )

Handy

After last weeks silent and unexciting week we see some more activity this week, especially from the South American market. The rates are for TA ́s up ard Usd 1,700 w-o-w, however USG/Med with scrap has been concluded at a low Usd 8k. Even though new cargoes appear the mrkt seems to be affected by market pariticipant

Being away attending coaltrans in Bali and Posidonia in Greece this week. Hopefully we will see next week bringing some more pressure and rates achieving decent levels again. Indonesia/India rounds are being oncluded in region of Usd 8k while a better 9k has been done for 2llegs bss delivery Indonesia. The period market is silent due to the major difference in bid/ask.

Panamax

This week started in a slow pace, little new requirements in atlantic and an increasing number of open vessels. Pacific also slow activity but slightly better than Atlantic. Week also influenced by Posidonia in Athens.

Atlantic rounds pending arnd 4-5 k while pacific still in the 6-6.5k. Despite cape got an upsving mid week this did not had much positive impact on panama unfortunately. A few fronthaul where covered in the 14k + 400.000. limited period concluded this week but panamax reported from 10.500 -11.000 for about 1 year.

Capesize

Mixed sentiments the past week as we have seen holidays in the east and Posidonia in Greece still going. Volumes maintained at healthy levels whilst rates overall have been flat, leaving the 180,000-tonners standard unchanged w-o-w. The Atlantic has seen the bigger improvements with the front hauls strengthen over 10%

Whilst the Waust/China trade broke $8 mark only to come back and at time of writing trading in the higher $7,

Giving a large discrepancy on the TC equivalents with standard candidates showing around $13,000 and $8,000

respectively. The period market has been more active with short period concluded around 20k, whilst one year

contracts has been concluded around 23/24k, seeing some improvements on the FFA for the remaining part of this year.

CHARTERING- GAS

The handful VLGCs that seemed available for spot charter in second half June got programmed/fixed one by one,

And it got obvious that the freight rates were ready for a new spike driven by larger demand than supply. It did

not take many days/fixtures to drive the market from low USD 80 ́s to mid/high USD90 ́s for the benchmark index route RasTanura/Chiba (or eqv)-i.e.reaching daily returns of USD70,000 per day on a modern ship.

The market did not look to be that strong in June onwards just a couple of weeks ago, however, when the theoretical fleet supply/demand balance is so near equilibrium, these rapid rate changes are the proof of the true state of the market. At the time of writing we hear of a MEG/East fixture at USD105pmt or USD 80,000/day for

Loading end of June, this signals strongly how tight the June market is in the East. Elsewhere, a PanaMax VLGC (75,000 cbm) has just been extended for 2 years from July ́14 at a whopping monthly TC hire of USD2.8Mill to

A charterer who requires the (current) Panama canal feature of this vessel. Needless to say, this is the highest ever medium term VLGC TC fixture.
