LNG海运50周年

2014.10.16

一:本期头条

50th Anniversary of world’s first LNG cargo    19641012日第一批天然气运到英国以来, 这种货运己扩展到400条航线和45个国家. 目前天然气己成为最热门之能源, 并且在不久的将来提供2,500名高级船员职位.

11/10/2014

October 12th 2014 marks an important milestone in the history of the LNG industry: since the Methane Princess delivered the world’s first commercial LNG cargo to the UK’s Canvey Island regasification terminal on 12th October 1964, the sector has mushroomed from this single trade between Algeria and the UK to over 400 trade routes involving 45 countries. Now a major part of the global energy industry, we believe LNG will remain one of the fastest growing commodities for the next five decades.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is not just becoming the world’s “go to” fuel it is becoming a major source of new jobs with vacancies likely to be created for 2500 specialist crew members on the world’s rapidly-expanding fleet of LNG tankers.

Japan ratifies Ballast Water Management Convention          日本是第42个国家认可 IMO 2004年之压舱水处理公约. 该公约尚差 2.98%之世界商船船队吨位便能生效.

The Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) is just 2.98% of the world fleet away from ratification after Japan signed up to the convention today.

A total of 42 states have now signed up to the convention representing 32.02% of the world merchant tonnage; the rules to prevent the transfer of invasive species will enter into force once signatories represent 35% of the fleet.

Vale Mega Ship Allowed at China Port After Deals      第一条 40万吨船山东 Da Ren’于本日2日停靠青岛 Dong Jia Kou (董家口) 码头卸货.

A giant iron-ore freighter owned by Vale SA was allowed to dock at a Chinese port last week, Reuters data showed, the first since the Brazilian miner signed deals with two of China’s largest shipping groups in what was seen as a thawing of relations.

Chinese ship owners have opposed access for Vale’s mega-ships of 400,000 deadweight tons, known as the Valemax, saying they could worsen a shipping glut and steal market share. In 2012, the Ministry of Transport banned the ships from China’s ports, citing safety concerns.

But last month, Vale signed deals with state-backed firms China COSCO and China Merchants Energy Shipping in a move that marked a breakthrough in the lengthy standoff and prompted analysts to forecast that Valemax ships would soon be docking in the world’s top iron ore consumer.

The mega-ship ‘Shandong Da Ren’ docked at Dongjiakou port in Qingdao, eastern China, on Oct. 2 at the start of a seven-day national holiday, and left for Singapore on Oct. 4, according to Reuters ship tracking data.

The ship, known as Vale Malaysia till the miner signed a four-ship chartering deal with Chinese state-owned Shandong Shipping Corporation last year, last docked at a Chinese port in April 2013. That marked a Valemax’s first entry since the 2012 Chinese ban though it was unclear why it had been allowed in.

China’s Ministry of Transport and Vale China did not return requests for comment when contacted by Reuters on Friday.

Vale’s inability to dock its very large iron ore carriers of at Chinese ports frustrated its attempts to reduce freight costs and compete with Australian based-rivals such as BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, which are closer to China.

三:港口 (Terminals)

APM Terminal is building a new container facility in the port of Lazaro Cardenas, on the Mexican Pacific coast.

In 2012, APM Terminals signed a 32-year concession for the design, construction and operation of a new deepwater terminal at the port of Lazaro Cardenas. The project will represent an overall investment of $900m, said APMT in a statement.

The first phase of the construction, which has already begun, of Terminal 2 (TEC2) will include 750 metres of quay, five ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, 22 automatic stacking cranes and two railway cranes, and will be able to accommodate very large container vessels.

The first 300 metres of quay are scheduled to be ready in the first quarter of 2015, which will be followed by the installation of the container handling equipment. “The completed terminal, which will add 1.2m teu of annual throughput capacity, is projected to become operational in the first half 2016,” said APM Terminals.

The government of Mexico has announced plans to double port capacity over the next six years to meet anticipated trade growth, particularly on the transpacific trade lane but many port operators wonder if cargo volume will increase accordingly.

Mexico is the second largest economy in Latin America, and third largest container throughput in the region. Mexico president Pena Nieto by passing an energy law opening the sector to foreign investments, expects it will boost construction, shipping and offshore development in the next two years.

Mexican ports dominated by Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, totalled 4.87m teu in 2013. Manzanillo, which is Mexico’s largest container port, handled 2.1m teu in 2013, followed by Lazaro Cardenas, located 340 km farther down the coast in the Michoacán State, with 1.05m teu.

2. Samalaju Port final package to be up for tender soon 马来西亚婆罗洲西岸 Bintulu 港码头建设最后一期工程即将开标.

Sarawak's Bintulu Port Holdings is set to award tenders for the final package, for wharf unloading equipment, of its massive Samalaju Port development project. Local media cited ceo Mior Ahmad Baiti Mior Lub Ahmad as saying that the tender is expected to open for bidding early next year.

Another major package, for the design, construction and completion of conveyor system facilities was awarded last month to Muhibbah Engineering for MYR157m ($48m). Bintulu Port Holdings has reportedly allocated a budget of MYR70m for the equipment needed in the final package, which includes one pneumatic suction loader and three units of level luffing cranes.

The new port is designed to serve energy-intensive industries like aluminium smelters and manganese and ferro-alloy smelters in the nearby Samalaju Industrial Park.

The MYR194m interim port facilities package was the first to have been completed and became operational about six months ago. The facilities, which include two wharves and a roll-on roll-off ramp, are capable of handling up to 4m tonnes of cargo a year.

Port operator Samalaju Industrial Port, which is a unit of Bintululu Port Holdings, is targeting to handle between 1m and 3m tonnes of cargo, mostly project cargo, each in 2014 and 2015.

Four conveyor lines would be built to either deliver raw materials from the port right to the manufacturing plants of energy-intensive industries, or have the raw materials transferred from the port to an open stockpile area, where the companies concerned would load them onto lorries and send them to their factories. Samalaju Port aims to handle 6m tonnes of cargo in its first year of full operations.

Thailand’s energy firm PTT is planning to build a third LNG terminal in Myanmar to help secure energy supply for the country, a news report said.

PTT is said to be studying a plan to build a LNG receiving terminal adjacent to a gas pipeline already linked to existing gas fields in Myanmar, Reuters quoted Nuttachat Charuchinda, chief operating officer for PTT’s upstream business.

The planned terminal is expected to have a capacity of 5m tonnes per year and will offer a more convenient location to ship LNG from suppliers in the Middle East, he was reported saying.

At present, PTT owns the $880m, 5m tonnes per year Map Ta Phut LNG import facility and parts of cross-country pipelines running for hundreds of kilometres from Myanmar.

The Thai firm is also building a second LNG terminal, with the same capacity, at Map Ta Phut in eastern province of Rayong, with construction scheduled to be completed in 2017.

3. CHARTERING- Dry bulk (week #42-2014)

Handy

The Handy/Supra market continues to slide in both hemispheres. In the Atlantic we see rates come off some Usd 500 w-o-w for Tarvs. An oversupply of ships vs. available cgos causing rates to slip and the ECSA + USG market that has been keeping it alive recently, is now coming off. In the Feast we also see the same slowing tendency and rates for all routes are under pressure. Singapore positions are fixing in region of Usd 10k for trips to India whereas the Indo and Aussie rounds are being fixed in region og Usd 8k. Shorter periods are still being concluded at ard Usd 10k or slightly above depending on delivery and specs.

Panamax

Despite Coaltrans in Denmark and a very slow start to the week, rates have been edging up in both hemispheres. In the Atlantic, TA's are now paying ard 7k on TC bss while the voyage rates are slightly lower. Ownes are able to secure 9 K for 2-3 transatlantic rounds. A steady flow of grains acitivtiy ex USG and iore ex ECSA is giving support to the fronthaul rates. In the Pacific we see the same tendency with especially, coal cargoes into India showing the way. Owners receive a premium for going to India, above 7.000 via Indonesia. Aussie and NoPac rounds are paying in excess of Usd 8k even 9 k for good deliveries and eco spec . The Chinese government implemented their import tax on coal and questions arise as how this may affect the dry bulk market. Meanwhile; the period market is showing signs of a return with 4-7 months in the mid 8 s.

Capesize

The market is still in the same negative shape as last week. In the far east a relatively good number of West Australia to China rounds are being concluded, but rates are further down presently, being around usd 7,25/ 7,30 pmt. Appart from the Australian iron ore, little is going on in the east. In the Atlantic, the same negative trand continues as well, still with a lack of fronthaul cargoes.

4. CHARTERING-Tankers

Crude VLCC

The October program in the Meg started briskly but has slowed down considerably and it becomes evident that we may have another slow month volume-wise. Owners optimism has been high for the start of the 'winter-market' and all eyes are on the start of the November program which is just around the corner. Sharply falling bunkerprices world-wide will have positive impacts on earnings and owners not likely to give away 'conquered ground' without a fight. Charterers remain patient as tonnage remain fairly balanced both for Meg and West Africa. After some active weeks for Suezmaxes specially from West Africa, we expect some quiet days ahead. This due to the fact of the high volume of Vlcc's been fixed from West Africa with laycan ely November. However we expect the market to hold due to delays in Medspecially from Trieste and also from South Africa causing some problem for Charterers in regards to replacements jobs. Med/ Bsea been active and rates still firming. The Nsea and Baltic Aframax market went sideways last week and rates remained unchanged. However, moving into end month October dates the market could improve on the back of limited tonnage supply. In the med rates are increasing for the second week in a row. The tonnage list is looking inspiring from an Owners perspective and with cargoes still entering the market expectations is for rates to increase further. Some Charterers have been forced to fix ships with a tight position, which in turn could cause replacement jobs.

CHARTERING-GAS

There were a few VLGC fixtures plus a few reprograms and all of a sudden a half bearish sentiment was turned into another rapid upswing in spot VLGC rates. The nominal spot rates hiked up by 10% in a matter of days, and on top the net results improved comparatively more by the substantial

in bunker prices of late. The latest confirmed spot fixture in the East is returning just short of USD 80,000 per day on a modern vessel - it means the market is back to where it was about to weeks ago. The cargo market values have strengthened this week after the substantial slide of prices at the end of last week, however, the East market still appears heavily oversupplied in a couple of months' perspective. Given the recent fall in crude prices and instability of LPG prices it is difficult to say whether VLGC shipping in itself has sufficient power to strengthen much ahead or whether it will be subject to continued nervous commodity markets in the weeks to come.
